Review: Slide by Jill Hathaway

Review: Slide by Jill Hathaway

Slide is the debut novel of Jill Hathaway and a book I was eager to read it from the moment I read the summary. It combines two of my favourite types of writing: crime and young adult, plus it adds a really compelling paranormal twist to this. Vee is narcoleptic, but while she has these episodes she ‘slides’ into someone else’s mind unintentionally. This has been a blight on her life since it started as she hates touching or keeping things people may have imprinted on or touched, particularly those she loves, in case she slides into them. When she slides one night however she witnesses the aftermath of the murder of a classmate that is later written off as suicide. With a killer around who may know about her sliding ability as they left a note on the night […]

In My Mailbox # 6

In My Mailbox # 6

So here is my sixth In My Mailbox which was started at thestorysiren.com as a way to show the books we’ve received or bought this week. Bought:                             Under The Never Sky-Veronica Rossi Nobody’s Girl-Sarra Manning By Midnight-Mia James The Catastrophic History of You and Me- Jess Rothenberg A lovely relative bought me the Catastrophic History of You and Me and I got the rest on a 3 for 2 offer, which I never seem to see anymore in shops so had to snap up. I’ve heard such great things about Under The Never Sky and I’ve wanted to read Nobody’s Girl for ages as I adored Let’s Get Lost by Sarra Manning. By Midnight was a more spontaneous choice but the summary intrigued me and I love books in boarding schools for […]

Review: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

Review: Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley

As my second review of love week at ChooseYA I am happy to present my review for the brilliant Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley. Graffiti Moon already has a place as one of my favourite YA contemporary novels/romances and confirms to me that Australian YA is definitely something I should keep my eye on. Cath Crowley writes beautifully and while sometimes dual narrators seem unnecessary, they were used very well here and were essential to greater understanding of what was happening. Lucy has finished year twelve and is celebrating with her friends. She wants to meet Shadow, a local and anonymous grafitti artist she admires when she runs into Ed, someone she had a pretty awful first date with, who knows Shadow and offers to show her some of his haunts. I don’t want to spoil the novel for you, […]

Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E Smith

Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E Smith

In honour of Valentine’s Day approaching, I am declaring it Love Week at ChooseYA and having a week of reviews and discussion on love stories and romance in YA. To kick this off is my recent review of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. Jennifer E Smith’s debut novel, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, has garnered a lot of hype and I would argue, it matches it. Smith tells the story of Hadley who is on her way to her dad’s wedding across the pond in London when she misses her flight. Enter Oliver, an adorable British student at Yale who is on his way home on the next flight. the two of connect and the novel chronicles before, during and after the flight. I loved that both characters had their own problems that couldn’t […]

Giveaway: Signed Copy of Katie Dale’s Someone Else’s Life

Hi guys, So as some of you who follow me on twitter may know, I was invited to and able to attend Katie Dale’s launch party in London on 2nd February and while there secured myself a signed copy of her book to giveaway here. This is my first giveaway so I am so excited to do this. Sadly as the book is quite heavy at nearly 500 pages long, and I am a poor student so I have to restrict this competition to entrants in the UK and Europe for the time being due to the cost of shipping. I am still having the international giveaway when I reach 50 direct blog followers though so don’t feel left out too much 🙂 This is a brilliant debut and I absolutely loved reading it and have no hesitations in recommending […]

Review: Beyond by T.P Boje

When I first started Beyond, I was struck by it’s similarity in opening to Gabrielle Zevin’s Elsewhere and was worried it was going to be a bit of a rip-off, within a chapter however I was pleasantly surprised that it changed course and became an original and exciting novel. Beyond tells the story of Meghan who has died and is a new student at the Academy, where she has to graduate in order to get to Heaven. I really enjoyed the world and take on the afterlife that Boje created. When Meghan accidentally visits earth again, she meets Jason and forms a friendship/budding romance with him. When she discovers he is going to die however, she is desperate to save him. While in terms of conflict, I appreciate the need for a good and evil side, I did find it […]

Review: Blood Warrior by HD Gordon

Review: Blood Warrior by HD Gordon

Goodreads summary: When her home is attacked by murderous vampires, 17-year-old Alexa is forced to leave her mother for dead in order to save her sister. She soon learns that she is the last known member of an elite race of supernatural Warriors, and is thrust into a world full of vampires and werewolves who all seem to regard her as some sort of savior. Meanwhile, Alexa battles a monster within herself that seeks to gain control; a monster that seeks blood. The hidden city she finds herself in appears perfect, but Alexa’s instincts tell her that all is not right within its walls. When she is asked to attend a school of fighters, whose exams consist of gladiator-style competitions, she must decide who she can trust among the smiling faces. And, when she meets Kayden, a vampire she feels […]

Review: Someone Else’s Life by Katie Dale

Review: Someone Else’s Life by Katie Dale

Katie Dale’s debut novel, Someone Else’s Life, is an absolute roller-coaster of a read, filled with more twists and drama than I ever expected. Katie Dale is a ‘winner’ of the 2008 Undiscovered Voices Anthology which publishes some of the best un-agented/published work by authors of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (British Isles). When Rosie’s mum, Trudie, was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, Rosie’s entire life changed. She took care of her mum to her death and even worse than this, spent the entire time knowing she could have inherited this same disease. After her mother’s death she learns an even more shocking truth: she is not Trudie’s biological daughter. Trudi’s ‘real’ daughter was incredibly ill at birth and going to die so a family friend, Sarah, swapped the baby for Rosie, who had been abandoned by a […]

Review: The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

Review: The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

I was really interested in reading this book and when I won a free copy through Mira Ink couldn’t wait to start it. I love Classics and Mythology, in fact I studied Classics at school and if it wasn’t for my love of writing and literature winning out in the end would have studied Classics at university. With this mind, I was aware that some reviews pointed out that the ‘tests’ apply to the seven sins which is a Christian teaching, however I was interested to see how this would be done and was not necessarily put off by this. This review includes some spoilers for the whole novel so please do be aware of this before reading any further. The basic plot of this novel is that Kate Winters, an eighteen year old American, moves to her dying mother’s […]
